Kaal Sarp Puja Procedure
Performing the Kaal Sarp Puja requires strict adherence to Vedic rituals. The puja process includes the following steps:
Step 1: Sankalp (Pledge for Puja)
- Holy Bath in Kushavarta Kund – Before starting the puja, devotees take a holy dip in the Kushavarta Kund, a sacred water body near Trimbakeshwar Mandir.
- Sitting in the Yajna Mandap – The devotee sits in a sacred space inside the temple where the puja takes place.
- Sankalp Mantra Recitation – The Pandit recites Sankalp Mantras while the devotee takes an oath to perform the puja with complete faith.
- Name and Gotra Mentioning – The prayer mentions the devotee’s name, birth details, and gotra (ancestral lineage) to personalize the puja.
This step purifies the devotees & mentally prepares them for the powerful ritual ahead.
Step 2: Worship of Lord Ganesha
- Ganesh Idol Placement – Someone places a small idol or picture of Lord Ganesha at the puja site.
- Recitation of Ganapati Mantras – The Pandit chants powerful Ganesh Mantras like:
- “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”
- “Vakratunda Mahakaya Surya Koti Samaprabha”
- Offering Flowers & Modaks – Devotees offer Flowers, Durva (grass), and Modaks (sweet dumplings) to Lord Ganesha.
- Aarti & Blessings – The Pandit performs aarti and seeks blessings from Lord Ganesha.
This eliminates obstacles and paves the way for a successful & effective Kaal Sarp Puja.
Step 3: Kalash Sthapana & Navagraha Puja
A Kalash (sacred water pot) represents cosmic energy & divine presence.
Procedure:
- Someone fills a Kalash with holy water and tops it with mango leaves & a coconut.
- Someone ties a red or yellow sacred thread (Mouli) around the Kalash.
- The Pandit invokes divine energy into the Kalash by reciting Vedic mantras.
The Navagraha (Nine Planets) influence human life according to Vedic astrology. To neutralize the effects of Kaal Sarp Dosh, pandits conduct a Navagraha Puja.
Steps Involved:
- Pandit place idols of the Nine Planets (Navagraha) on a sacred platform.
- People chant Navagraha Mantras to appease planetary deities.
- People offer flowers, turmeric, sandalwood, and rice to each planetary deity.
- Devotees pray for relief from malefic planetary influences.
The Navagraha Puja pacifies planetary doshas and receives blessings.

Step 4: Ritualistic Worship of Nag Devta
Why Worship Nag Devta?
The main focus of Kaal Sarp Puja is to worship the Serpent Gods (Nag Devtas), as Kaal Sarp Dosh associates with the influence of Rahu & Ketu (shadow planets linked to snakes).
Nag Devta Puja Process:
- Someone places a symbolic snake idol (made of silver, copper, or clay).
- Nag Devta devotees chant mantras, including:
- “Om Kurukulye Hum Phat Swaha”
- “Om Nag Devtaya Namah”
- Offering Milk & Flowers – Devotees offer milk, black sesame seeds, and red flowers to the Nag Devta.
- Chanting of Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Mantra – A special mantra is recited to remove the dosh’s effects.
This step helps remove the karmic burden associated with snake-related sins from past lives.
Step 5: Pind Daan & Offerings
Pind Daan is the act of offering food to ancestors’ souls to ensure their peace & liberation. Since Kaal Sarp Dosh is often linked to past karma, performing Pind Daan helps gain ancestral blessings.
Process of Pind Daan:
- The devotee offers rice balls (Pind) to departed souls.
- People use holy water, black sesame seeds, and darbha grass in the offering.
- Someone chants a special mantra to seek forgiveness from ancestors.
- People give Brahmins (pandits) food, clothes, and Dakshina (donation).
This ritual ensures peace for departed souls and removes ancestral curses (Pitru Dosh).
Step 6: Rudrabhishek & Conclusion
Rudrabhishek is a powerful Shiv Puja that devotees perform to please Lord Shiva, the ruler of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.
This is the final & most powerful step of the Kaal Sarp Puja.
Rudrabhishek Process:
- Shiv devotees bathe the Shivling with holy substances, including:
- Milk – Symbolizes purity.
- Honey – Represents sweetness in life.
- Ghee – Signifies prosperity.
- Bel Patra (Bilva Leaves) – Highly sacred for Lord Shiva.
- Gangajal (Ganges Water) – Considered the most purifying element.
- Chanting of Rudra Mantras – The Pandit recites:
- “Om Namah Shivaya”
- “Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam”
- Devotees perform Aarti and receive Prasad.
- People give blessings for health, wealth, and success.
This final step removes all negative effects of Kaal Sarp Dosh and grants harmony & prosperity in life.
